OPEN CALL for Workshop-Participants
We are looking for people to participate in A/O-holics, a workshop of Vienna based collective adO/Aptive that will take place on Thursday, 29.8.2024 – 12:00 to 16:00 in Centar Skenderija Sarajevo. The resulting objects produced during the workshop will be shown in the exhibition Giddy Flames at Collegium Artisticum, to be opened on the day after (30.8.2024) and will be on view until September 22nd. The participation is free. No special skills are necessary. The workshop will be held in English.
A-/O-holics self-help groups
-aholic is a word-forming element that was abstracted from alcoholic, a term used to denominate alcohol use disorder. It first appeared as a suffix in sugarholic and foodoholic; later in workaholic, golfaholic, chocoholic and shopaholic. All these examples show that addiction can be an appendix to anything. Moreover, these suffixes serve as markers to label certain relations as pathological, harmful and compulsive.
Oppressive, Out of reach, Anonymous, Amnesiac.
When thinking about addiction in this pathological terms, one automatically thinks of its pharmacological responses: cures, support groups, Abstinence. But, what is it that we can be -aholic or -oholic of? Is it really just sugar, golf, work, drugs? What if we repurpose this marker to gain a critical point of view on other aspects we have an equally compulsive and disorderly relation to?
In the frame of the A/O-holics workshop we would like to think of addiction as markers of sociological, political and even philosophical standpoints and tendencies. We will employ technics and methods borrowed from the popular treatments of addictions (like support groups and 12 steps and 12 traditions programs) to deal with 4 concepts we want to suffix the -a-oholic marker to: Hope, Topology, Surplus and Conspiracy. Through this open call, we want to gather Hope’aholics, Topo’holics, Surplus’aholics & Conspire’aholics in working groups for the -a/-oholics club, that will be active in the shopping mall of Center Skanderija Sarajevo. Within these gathering, we will not only work on our addictions, but also on collective art pieces that will be presented in the context of the exhibition Giddy Flames at Collegium Artisticum on the day after.

adO/Aptive is a collective based in Vienna and active around central Europe. It foments critical thinking, potential action, communication and Otherness by adopting techniques to situate adaptive processes. It was founded in 2019. Since then, AdO/Aptive has organised events like conferences (rA/Upture conference, OFF-Bienniále Budapest) or workshops and worked on collective art projects at the intersection of performance, theory and speculation.
